Measure before you buy
Measure before you order, at the spot where the hook, shelf, or rod will sit.
Door
Measure the thickness at the top edge, where an over-the-door hook has to sit. US interior doors are usually 1-3/8 inches thick. Some interior doors are 1-3/4 inches thick. Then check the gap at the top of the frame. The hook sits in that gap, and the door still needs to close.
The UDENIS rack is listed for doors up to 1.77 inches. That covers a 1-3/8 inch door. It also covers a 1-3/4 inch door, though the fit is tight. The FYY hooks are listed for doors 1.2 to 1.4 inches thick, so they suit the thinner door.
Wall
Adhesive hooks and ledges need a smooth surface, because the strip has to sit flat to hold its weight rating. Smooth painted drywall, tile, glass and finished wood all work, and those are the surfaces the listings name.
Textured drywall doesn't give the strip full contact. Orange peel and knockdown finishes leave a raised pattern you can see and feel. Wallpaper and brick won't hold the strip either. If your wall is like this, an over-the-door hook or a tension rod is the better choice.
If the wall was painted recently, wait seven days before you put anything up. Paint that is already flaking can come off with the strip.
Cabinet
Measure the clear width between the side walls at the height you want the rod, and keep the tape clear of the P-trap. You need a straight run of wall on both sides. The door opening is often a different width, so measure the walls. The rods in the under-sink guide fit cabinets from 12 to 36 inches wide.
The guide names three rods. For 12 to 17 inches, use the ZipGlo rod, which adjusts from 12 to 19 inches. For 17 to 26 inches, use the middle AIZESI rod. It adjusts from 17 to 28 inches, and AIZESI recommends it for 17 to 26. For a wider cabinet, use the 26.5–36 inch AIZESI rod. Between 26.5 and 28 inches, either AIZESI rod fits.
Common questions
How do I measure a door for over-the-door hooks?
Measure the thickness at the top edge of the door. US interior doors are usually 1-3/8 inches thick, and some are 1-3/4 inches thick. Check the gap at the top of the frame. The hook has to sit in that gap, and the door still has to close.
How can I tell if my wall is textured?
Look at the paint and run a hand across it. Orange peel and knockdown leave a raised pattern. Smooth painted drywall, tile, glass, and finished wood feel flat, and those surfaces suit adhesive. Textured drywall, wallpaper, and brick do not.
What if what I want to hang isn't covered?
The guides cover over-the-door hooks, Command hooks, a small adhesive shelf and an under-sink tension rod. For anything else, the Fit Finder will tell you there isn't a guide for it yet.
